How to cover a cake with fondant:
Covering a cake with fondant is a great way to create a smooth, professional-looking finish for your cakes. Fondant is a pliable sugar paste that can be molded and shaped to cover cakes, cupcakes, and other baked goods. In this guide, we'll walk you through the steps to cover a cake with fondant.
Ingredients and Equipment:
Step 1: Prepare your cake Before covering your cake with fondant, it's important to prepare it first. Start by trimming the top of the cake to make it level, and then apply a thin layer of buttercream or ganache to create a crumb coating. This will help the fondant stick to the cake and prevent any crumbs from showing through.
Step 2: Roll out the fondant Dust your work surface with powdered sugar or cornstarch to prevent the fondant from sticking. Roll out your fondant to the desired size and thickness, making sure it's large enough to cover your cake. A good rule of thumb is to roll it out to about 1/8 inch thickness.
Step 3: Cover the cake Once you have rolled out your fondant, carefully drape it over your cake. Gently smooth the fondant down over the cake with your hands, working from the center outwards to avoid any air pockets. Use a cake smoother or fondant smoother to smooth out any wrinkles or bumps.
Step 4: Trim the excess fondant Using a pizza cutter or sharp knife, trim away the excess fondant from the bottom of the cake. Be sure to leave a small amount of excess fondant at the base of the cake, as this will help to create a clean, finished edge.
Step 5: Decorate your cake Now that your cake is covered with fondant, it's time to decorate it! You can add additional fondant decorations, such as flowers, bows, or letters, by using piping gel or water to stick them to the cake. You can also use food coloring to tint the fondant to create different colors.
Step 6: Serve and enjoy Your cake is now ready to be served and enjoyed! Covering a cake with fondant may seem intimidating at first, but with a little practice, it can be a fun and rewarding technique to master.
